Biography of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee (born: December 25, 1924) is a former Prime Minister of India. He served as Prime Minister of India from 16 May to 1 June 1996 and then from 19 March 1998 to 22 May 2004. His other talents include being a poet, a journalist, and a strong speaker. Bharatiya Jana Sangh was founded by him and he served as its president from 1968 to 1973. Throughout his life, he remained active in Indian politics. Additionally, he edited a number of national newspapers and magazines like Rashtradharma, Panchjanya, and Veer Arjuna for many years.

He started his life as a pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh with the resolve to remain unmarried for life and fulfilled that resolution with full devotion till he reached the highest post of the country. Vajpayee was the first non-Congress Prime Minister to serve five years as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. He formed the government with a coalition of 24 parties in which there were 81 ministers. No party ever hesitated. This shows his leadership ability.

Early life

Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji was born on 25 December 1924 in Brahmamuhart in Gwalior. The local belief holds that while a plate of flowers was being played in a house when the family got their first son, Lord Jesus Christ’s birthday was being celebrated in a nearby church with bells and cannons. Baba Shyamlal Vajpayee named the baby Atal. The baby was affectionately called Atalla by Mother Krishnadevi.

The name of his father was Pt. Krishna Bihari Vajpayee. He was an expert in three languages, Sanskrit, Hindi, and English. Pt. Krishna Bihari Vajpayee was a respected poet of Gwalior state. Every school in the state conducted the Ish prayer composed by him. When he was a teacher, Dr. Shivmangal Singh Suman was his disciple. Atal Ji has inherited the form of a poet without exaggeration.

political life

As a member of Arya Kumar Sabha of Gwalior, he was considered the youth force of Arya Samaj at the time, and in 1944 he became its general secretary. As a volunteer, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1939. He attended RSS training camps during 1940-44 and became a full-time worker of the RSS in 1947, under Babasaheb Apte’s influence. He discontinued his law studies because of the spread of partition seeds.

His first assignment as a pracharak was to work with Deendayal Upadhyay for newspapers like Rashtradharma (Hindi Monthly), Panchjanya (Hindi Weekly), Dainik Swadesh, and Veer Arjun. Vajpayee was never married. He lived a bachelor’s life his entire life. The 10th former Indian Prime Minister was Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In 1996, he served for 13 days as prime minister, and then from 1998 to 2004, he served as prime minister again. 

He is the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The first Indian Prime Minister to serve for five years who was not a member of the Indian National Congress was him.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s political journey began as a freedom fighter. In 1942, he was arrested along with other leaders for participating in the ‘Quit India Movement. During this time, Vajpayee met Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (B.J.S.).

As a result of health issues, Mookerjee passed away soon after, and B.J.S. Vajpayee took over the leadership and continued the ideas and agenda of this organization. As a Member of Parliament from the Balrampur seat, he was elected in 1954. Vajpayee gained respect and a place in the political world despite his young age due to his wide-ranging vision and knowledge. In 1977, Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the foreign minister of Morarji Desai’s government.

He traveled to China two years later to discuss relations with China. During his visit to Pakistan, he took steps to improve the trade relations between India and Pakistan that were adversely affected by the 1971 war between the two nations. When the Janata Party launched the RSS. attacked, then he resigned from the post of minister in 1979. He and his colleagues, including LK Advani and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, laid the foundations for the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980. In the first five years after the party was founded, Vajpayee served as its president.

Atal’s work as Prime Minister

In addition to being famous among the masses, Atal Bihari Vajpayee had a strong political stance. As the leader of the National Democratic Alliance coalition government, he became Prime Minister of India for the second time in a row on 13 October 1999. He served as Prime Minister for a short period in 1996. It is the first time since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru that a Prime Minister has served two consecutive terms.

Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji served in politics for nearly four decades. It is a record in itself that he was elected nine times to the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and twice to the Rajya Sabha (House of the States). He played a significant role in shaping India’s domestic and foreign policy after independence as Prime Minister, Minister of External Affairs, Chairman of various important standing committees of Parliament, and leader of the Opposition.

The announcement was made during his lifetime, but it must be credited to Advani ji for promoting Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji to become Prime Minister. The tireless efforts Advani Ji made to mobilize support for Atal Ji will surely be remembered.

The Hindutva policy of the BJP also helped him to gain votes. Political opponents can never remain friends or enemies forever. Atalji had to deal with the entire country and its problems once he became Prime Minister. The BJP could not be his sole focus. He was limited by the Constitution.

Even so, Atalji was a moral person. In addition, N. D. A. He also had a responsibility to Advani Ji wanted that the issue of Ram Mandir should be resolved. But Atal Ji knew that N. D. A. The other parties involved will not be ready for this. Atal Ji did not want to be a controversial prime minister. However, he knew the consequences would be far-reaching. Because of this, he had ideological differences from Advani Ji.

Here is the front page of the first issue of Rashtradharma with a black and white photograph of young Atal Ji and two of his famous poems- introduction and invocation- followed by the cover page of the April 1950 issue of Panchjanya, which was also edited by Atal Ji. This special issue contains 96 pages with about 40 articles, plus 4 poems. Atal Ji wrote a letter to the top litterateur of that time, Pt. Shrinarayan Chaturvedi is published. Atal Ji then composed a poem dedicated to the founder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar.

In describing Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji’s talent in his editorial remarks, the editor noted that in 1957, when Atal Ji won from the Balrampur region (U.P.) in the general election, Prime Minister Nehru addressed the House for the first time. Atal Ji was so impressed by his oratory that when John Fitzgerald Kennedy stood for the election of the President of America, instead of sending any member of his party, he sent Atalji of Jan Sangh to understand the electoral system with him. Perhaps Nehru Ji got a glimpse of that young man Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s ability to become the future Prime Minister of India.

He lived in a government residence at 6-A Krishna Menon Marg in New Delhi since 2005, when he retired from politics. Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away on 16 August 2018 at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi after a prolonged illness. Throughout his life, he was active in Indian politics.
