Early Life
Manohar Lal Khattar (born: 5 May 1954) has been elected as the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Haryana. On 26 October 2014, he took oath as the 10th Chief Minister of Haryana. Manohar Lal Khattar is the first Chief Minister of Haryana who comes from the non-Jat community, after 18 years he is the first non-Jat leader to sit on this post.
He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has been a campaigner of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He represents Karnal in the Haryana Legislative Assembly. After the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2014 Haryana Legislative Assembly elections, he was elected leader by the legislature party and nominated for the post of Chief Minister.
Manohar Lal Khattar was born on May 5, 1954, in Nidana village of Rohtak. Hailing from a simple farmer family, Khattar belongs to the Punjabi community. Khattar’s family had migrated from Pakistan to Nidana village in Rohtak district after the 1947 Partition of India. Khattar was very much ahead in all the activities of the school. Khattar wanted to become a doctor, due to this hobby of studies, Khattar became the first member of his family to pass the 10th standard. Manohar Lal Khattar started doing a shop in Sadar Bazar in Delhi after passing tenth. Also, he did his graduation from Delhi University.
Property not sought from brothers
Manohar Lal Khattar has about two and a half acres of land and an ancestral house in village Baniyani. Manohar’s brothers got shattered in different districts. Now when the mention of the division of land came, Manohar refused to take the land and dedicated it to the younger brother Gulshi (Gulshan). Manohar Lal never did such a thing to his brothers.
Headmaster to Chief Minister
Popularly known as ‘Headmaster’ among friends in childhood, Khattar hails from Rohtak. His grandfather Bhagwan Das Khattar along with his family had come from Pakistan at the time of partition of the country. When Manohar Lal was 4 years old, his father Harbans Lal Khattar came to Baniyani village in Rohtak district. His grandfather and father had a shop in Nindana, while in Baniyani they had bought land for farming. He did his primary school education in this village and did his matriculation from the neighboring village of Mali Anandpur. According to close friends, Khattar was of a serious nature during his school days, due to which his colleagues used to call him ‘Headmaster’.
According to Khattar’s brother Charanjit, Manohar wanted to prepare for medical but the father wanted him to devote time to business. Around 1974, Manohar came to Delhi’s Rani Bagh with his brothers and started the business. In 1976, he came in contact with the RSS, and in an emergency, the contact kept increasing. In 1980, he joined the Sangh full-time. Manohar Lal Khattar was under tremendous pressure from the family for marriage in his youth. The family wanted him to leave the campaign tradition of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and settle down, but Khattar did not marry.
In 1994, Khattar was given the responsibility of State Organization Minister in Haryana BJP. The 1996 assembly election was contested by BJP along with Bansi Lal’s party Haryana Vikas Party. Khattar had a big role in making the strategy of this election. In 2002, the party made him in charge of Jammu and Kashmir. In the Lok Sabha elections, Khattar was made the chairman of the election campaign committee in Haryana. 60-year-old Khattar is one of the close friends of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Conflict
He once commented on the issue of beef that drew much criticism, writing that: “Muslims can live in India, but they must stop eating beef”. After this statement, the BJP party immediately said that ‘it has nothing to do with the party and it is their personal view’. He changed his statement within 24 hours of his statement, and he said that I do not want to hurt people’s sentiments and I am sorry for that.
Interesting information
During the 1947 India-Pakistan partition, his family shifted from the Jhang district of Pakistan to Haryana. When he was studying at Delhi University, he used to run a clothing shop near Sadar Bazar. Before entering politics as a member of the BJP in 1994, he joined the RSS in 1977 and served as a pracharak in 1980.
He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Haryana on 26 October 2014 and became the first Chief Minister of Haryana from the Bharatiya Janata Party. He once commented on the issue of beef, due to which he was heavily criticized.
